The delivery clock

Atom Computing keeps winning the physics. The only number left to prove is the distance from announced to deployed.

Atom Computing was first to a 1,000-atom array in 2023 and first to sustained error correction on neutral atoms in June 2026. It has had a named, funded, government-backed buyer since July 2025: Denmark's QuNorth, which is paying for Magne, a 50-logical-qubit machine Atom builds with Microsoft.

So the open question was never who buys the machine, or whether Atom can pay for the work. The company is well funded: a $100 million Series C led by Third Point Ventures, announced June 16, 2026, on top of the $100 million Commerce letter of intent, which Atom reports brings its total funding above $300 million. The open question is whether the machine ships. The timeline below tracks the physics, all of it delivered and citable. The ladder beneath it tracks Magne against the publication's own test: announced, funded, in construction, installed, running. The top rungs are lit. The bottom two are dark. That gap is the story.

Ben Bloom and Jonathan King start Atom Computing on a strontium-87 neutral-atom optical-tweezer thesis. Optical tweezers hold individual atoms in place with focused laser light.

First past 1,000 physical qubits
A 1,225-site array holding 1,180 strontium-87 atoms. The first quantum company to cross the 1,000-qubit physical-array threshold. Physical, not logical: these are the raw atoms, not error-corrected qubits.

24 logical qubits, with Microsoft
A joint demonstration of error-corrected logical qubits on Atom hardware with Microsoft Azure Quantum. The company's public identity moves from "biggest array" to "logical qubits." A logical qubit is many physical atoms run together so errors can be caught and fixed.

QuNorth buys Magne
EIFO and the Novo Nordisk Foundation commit 80 million euros to stand up QuNorth and buy Magne, a 50-logical-qubit, 1,225-physical-atom full-stack machine from Atom and Microsoft, sited in Copenhagen. Ninety cycles of error correction
A toric code run through 90 cycles of syndrome extraction, with continuous atom reload, and two code distances compared: the larger code produced the lower logical error rate. CONTRACTED WINDOW

Construction began autumn 2025. The buyer's release says Magne is to be ready "by the new year 2026/27." Microsoft's framing says end of 2026. The bottom two rungs have until then to light.

How to read this. The top two rungs lit on the same day, July 17, 2025. The third is on the strength of a single sentence in that release; no independent build milestone has been published since. The bottom two are dark because no primary source has lit them. The question this Deep tests is not whether Atom has a customer. It is whether the dark rungs light before the window closes.

THIS WEEK · AND WHAT IT IS NOT

The bigger item this week is capital. On June 16, 2026 Atom announced a $100 million Series C led by Third Point Ventures, with DCVC and Cisco Investments taking part. Atom reports that brings its total funding above $300 million once the $100 million Commerce letter of intent is counted. It is now well funded. But money is not delivery. A funding round does not put Magne on the floor in Copenhagen, does not get it accepted by QuNorth, and does not run a single logical job. June 15, 2026: Atom also signed an MOU with Phasecraft, a quantum algorithms company, to explore using application-focused algorithms to benchmark progress and to adapt Phasecraft software to Atom hardware for materials work. It is not an order. No money, no machine, no deliverable, no date, and it sits below the Commerce LOI on this ladder: a memorandum to explore is softer than a letter of intent. It does not light a rung. We log it because we saw it, and we label it for what it is. The one durable line in that release is Atom's own confirmation that the QuNorth sale happened in 2025, which is why the top of this ladder is dated 2025, not today.

THE QUALIFIER

"Level 2" or "fault-tolerant"?

The buyer's own materials define three levels of quantum computing. Level 1 is error-prone machines. Level 2 is logical qubits with error correction. Level 3 is "fault-tolerant." The release places Magne at Level 2 and reserves "fault-tolerant" for Level 3.

Microsoft's separate framing calls Magne "fault-tolerant." Those are not the same claim. One says error-corrected; the other says error rates that keep falling as the machine scales, the higher bar the field calls fault tolerance.

The publication's rule: "fault-tolerant" gets a qualifier check every time. On this machine, the buyer and the vendor do not yet agree on the word. The Deep states the gap and lets the spec, when it lands, settle it.
