No other place holds every layer of a quantum computer inside one commute. The people who build each layer can drive to the people who build the next.

The next generation is already enrolled. Mines seats its first Quantum Systems Engineering undergraduates this fall. IonQ Boulder expects its first machine by late 2026. The first labs at Quantum Commons come online this year. This valley is not a monument to 1954. It is a bet on what ships next.

NBS Boulder opens
The National Bureau of Standards plants a precision-measurement lab at the foot of the Flatirons. It will be renamed NIST in 1988.
1962
JILA founded
NIST partners with the University of Colorado Boulder to launch a joint institute. Atomic, molecular, and optical physics gets its American capital.
1989
Laser cooling matures
JILA groups push laser cooling toward the microkelvin regime. The toolkit that will later trap qubits is being invented in real time.
1997
Laser cooling wins the Nobel
Steven Chu (Stanford/Bell Labs), William Phillips (NIST Gaithersburg), and Claude Cohen-Tannoudji (Collège de France) share the prize. The technique becomes the foundational toolkit that NIST Boulder and JILA spend the next two decades extending.
2001
Bose-Einstein condensate
Eric Cornell and Carl Wieman, working at JILA, share the Nobel for cooling rubidium to 170 billionths of a kelvin. A new state of matter, observed in a Boulder basement.
2005
Optical frequency comb
Jan Hall (JILA) shares the Nobel for the optical frequency comb. The technique now anchors atomic clocks, sensing, and timing across the entire ecosystem.
2012
Trapped-ion Nobel
David Wineland, working at NIST Boulder, shares the Nobel for trapped-ion measurement. The technique is the direct ancestor of Quantinuum's systems.
2018
Atom Computing founded
Ben Bloom spins out of CU Boulder to build neutral-atom processors. The valley starts to look like an industry.
2026
Google plants a flag
Google Quantum AI hires Adam Kaufman from CU Boulder and opens a Boulder office. IonQ cuts the ribbon on a 22,000 sq ft R&D lab on 38th Street.

ColdQuanta (Infleqtion) founded
The first commercial spin-out of the JILA toolkit. Quantum hardware leaves the lab and starts shipping product.
2025
Infleqtion goes public (SPAC)
ColdQuanta, renamed Infleqtion, completes a SPAC merger with Churchill Capital X. $1.8 billion pre-money valuation. Three commercial products shipping: a quantum computer, an atomic clock in orbit, and a defense sensor in active deployment.
2026
Infleqtion lists on NYSE
Infleqtion begins trading as INFQ on February 17, 2026. $2.2 billion implied valuation. $528 million in gross proceeds. The first publicly traded neutral-atom quantum company.

Honeywell's quantum program merges with Cambridge Quantum Computing and headquarters in Broomfield. Trapped-ion gets its commercial flagship.

Federal equity stakes in three Colorado companies
The Trump administration awards $2 billion in CHIPS Act grants to nine quantum companies and takes minority equity stakes in each. Three Colorado recipients: Infleqtion, Atom Computing, and Quantinuum, each receiving $100 million. Washington treats the valley as strategic infrastructure.

Quantinuum lists on Nasdaq
Quantinuum begins trading as QNT on June 4, 2026. The IPO priced at $60 on June 3, above the $53 to $55 range. Honeywell retains roughly a 54 percent stake. Colorado's most significant public quantum listing to date.
