Icarus Quantum, a spinout of the Quantum Nanophotonics Group in NIST Boulder's Physical Measurement Laboratory, is building efficient, reliable quantum light generators, sources that emit single photons and entangled photon pairs on demand. That sounds narrow until you notice that every quantum network, repeater, and photonic interconnect starts with exactly this component, and that today's sources are mostly probabilistic, lossy, or both.
Deterministic, high-efficiency photon sources are to the quantum internet what reliable transistors were to classical computing: the unglamorous component that decides whether the architecture above it works. It's early-stage, it's deep tech, and it's the sort of company that either becomes critical infrastructure or quietly teaches the ecosystem something, the venture math of the Quantum Valley in miniature.
Why it matters to the Valley: Colorado's quantum networking story is thinner than its computing and sensing stories; Icarus is the bet that fills the gap.
