NV Center (Nitrogen-Vacancy)
A defect in diamond that behaves like a trapped atom and stays quantum-coherent at room temperature. The workhorse of quantum sensing, no cryogenics required.
A nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center is a defect in diamond, a nitrogen atom next to a missing carbon, that behaves like a trapped atom welded into a crystal. Its electron spin can be initialized and read out with visible light, manipulated with microwaves, and, remarkably, stays quantum-coherent at room temperature. No dilution refrigerator, no vacuum chamber, no laser-cooling apparatus.
That robustness makes NV centers the workhorse of quantum sensing: magnetometers that map fields at the nanoscale, sensors inside living cells, diamond-anvil experiments reading magnetism under crushing pressure. They're also credible quantum-network nodes, since the spin couples to emitted photons.
NVs are the counterexample to the rule that quantum hardware must live at millikelvin temperatures, and a reminder that 'quantum technology' is a much bigger tent than computing.
