Optical Lattice

A standing wave of laser light that traps atoms in a perfectly periodic artificial crystal, used for the world's best atomic clocks and quantum simulators.

An optical lattice is a standing wave of laser light that acts like an egg carton for atoms. Where the light is intense, atoms feel a dip in energy and settle in; the result is a perfectly periodic artificial crystal whose spacing, depth, and geometry are set by the laser, not by chemistry.

Lattices are the backbone of the world's best atomic clocks, including the strontium lattice clocks at JILA in Boulder that hold accuracy records measured in parts per 10¹⁸, and of quantum simulators that mimic solid-state physics with one atom per site. They're also cousins of the optical-tweezer arrays used by neutral-atom quantum computers: same principle, light holding atoms, different geometry.
