Why Colorado chose neutral atoms and trapped ions

Both approaches benefit from decades of atomic physics research at NIST and JILA in Boulder. Eric Cornell and Carl Wieman (Nobel 2001, Bose-Einstein condensate) and David Wineland (Nobel 2012, trapped ions) built the foundational knowledge base that made Atom Computing, Infleqtion, and Quantinuum possible. The commercial ecosystem grew from the academic roots, not from venture capital importing external technology.
