A vapor cell is deceptively simple to describe, a sealed box of atoms that a laser can interrogate, and brutally hard to manufacture well. It is the heart of atomic clocks, magnetometers, and wavelength references, and the company was founded in Boulder in 2020 as Vapor Cell Technologies by Doug Bopp, a former NIST researcher, to make it a real manufactured product. Where traditional vapor cells are hand-blown glass, the company microfabricates them on wafers in parallel with uniform characteristics, integrating micro-optics, heaters, electrodes, and specialized barrier coatings that hand-made cells cannot match.

The company sells to large and small businesses, government, and academic labs, and its work has drawn federal attention, including recognition under the NIST CHIPS for America program, a signal that Washington sees vapor cells as supply chain infrastructure, not a curiosity. In March 2025 the founder announced the rebrand to Apex Atomics, though the company remains listed as Vapor Cell Technologies in the Elevate Quantum Tech Hub consortium.

Why it matters to the Valley: every atomic sensor and clock that leaves a Colorado lab needs a cell full of atoms, and this is one of the few places on Earth that manufactures them at chip scale.
